TOLEDO EXCEL: EXCEL UT3

students performing science experimentsUT3 is a University of Toledo partnership grant dedicated to recruiting, preparing, and supporting highly qualified science and math urban teachers. The program is designed to provide education students with academic, financial, and professional support to successfully teach science or math. The EXCEL UT3 component, a six week academic year initiative and a 3-week residential Summer Institute, is designed to encourage and prepare 15-20 TOLEDO EXCEL pre-college students to be successful in pre-service and professional development as teachers of mathematics and science education, acquaint students with the practical aspects of teaching early on and create opportunities for academically talented students to interact with successful science and mathematics teachers.

students with test tubesStudents who participate in the EXCEL UT3 six week academic initiative will take part in activities and classes that are designed to provide additional knowledge and experience with math and science and the teaching and learning process. Students will have the opportunity to learn while teaching others through tutoring students and working along side teachers in the classroom.

Students will then have the opportunity to participate in the EXCEL UT3 Summer Institute which is designed to help improve math & science skills, promote career exploration in the fields of math, science and engineering and develop personal skills, such as leadership and responsibility. Those selected to participate in the EXCEL UT3 Summer Institute will be eligible to receive a stipend and can substitute this program for their required Summer Institute.
